Tips on beginning to work out

"An hour workout is only 4% of your day. No excuses."

As recent as wednesday of last week, I decided it was time to grab the bull by the horns and join a gym. This can be, and was, a pretty daunting experience, so I thought I would share a few tips I learnt along the way with you to make your transition from sofa sloth to sports queen a whole lot easier.

Join a gym close to home

If, like me, your motivation over the last couple of years to work out has been at an all time low, realistically its not going to rocket sky high the minute you join a gym. Therefore, if you join a gym a thirty minute car ride or 10 stops down your train journey, you're going to be far less motivated to get off your ass and go. Joining one close to home means it will take a lot more time out of your day (see above quote) and gives you a lot less excuses why you haven't got time to go between finishing work and going out for drinks in the evening.

Go at non-peak times

Nothing is more nerve-wracking than walking up to a big, transformer-like machine and trying to figure out how it works in front of a crowd of people. Work out when your gym is most empty (mine is around 12-3pm on weekdays) and go then. That way, there may only be a couple of people in there and you can go around familiarising yourself with each machine, what it works on and how to use it, that way you will feel a lot more confident and relaxed going over to it in the future and altering the weights, seat height and speed etc. even in a room full of people. And believe me, people are so engrossed in what they're doing anyway they really won't be hawk-eyeing you or having a giggle at you for sitting there puzzled for a while.

Have all the gear and no idea

As someone who's into fashion, one of my favourite parts of the whole gym thing is the clothing you can wear. It seems at the gym, and unlike anywhere else, you can wear as many bright colours and clashing patterns you want and can get away with it. Both H&M and TK Maxx are great for low cost gym wear and you will be a lot more motivated to go to the gym if you've treated yourself to some new kit that you feel fabulous in.

Go at it alone

Joining a gym with a friend can make the experience far less daunting however don't let your friend become your excuse. Just because your friend is too busy to go to the gym it doesn't mean that you shouldn't go. If you've decided you're going to go four times a week then stick to it even if your friend can't.

Remember exercise doesn't have to cost

Gyms can be expensive and I'm lucky enough to live near a low cost one, but that doesn't mean we all want to spend our money on gym passes. Working out at home is just as easy and whilst its summer using your garden or going for runs is a great way to stay fit.

Use social media to your advantage

Not know what exercises are best for the toned tum you want to achieve? Instagram and YouTube are both full to the brim of work outs you can do and fitness motivation so get following as many accounts as you want, then watch and repeat! One of my favourite work outs off YouTube is this one by Anna Saccone and her personal trainer Lucy, you will definitely feel the burn in the morning! I also follow @fitgirlvideos and @alyakattan on instagram to find a work out I like whilst I'm at the gym. These are also full of great work outs to do at home.
